Instructions
In these five-paragraph thesis you will make a claim (thesis) about how the Old Testament informs us about our human relationship to God. You will consult primarily the Bible’s stories, the Handbook to the Bible as a resource (unless another resource is preferred), and a recent news story or opinion piece from a well-recognized web newspaper, journal, or magazine (must be a credible source) to address specific questions in the course as outlined in the schedule. Your response should be at least one-page long that includes an
Introduction/Summary – introduce and briefly condense what the reading covered in general terms.
Comprehension – highlight key ideas, teachings, or concerns that the author shared.
Application – how does the text resonate with experience and reality (“real life”)?
Analysis – point out specific flaws or strengths (evidence use, accuracy, clarity, bias, etc.).
Evaluation/Conclusion – What was learned from the texts. Themes of readings. What was understood. Feel free to utilize other resources to help formulate your analysis, i.e., Bible Commentary, Online Bible Resources, etc.
You must show personal interaction with the text by referring to the text directly, citation (ex. As Paul mentioned, “And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who] have been called according to his purpose.” Romans 8:28). No “Works Cited” page expected (unless any outside sources are used).
Expected Outline:
First paragraph: introduce topic, present your thesis/claim to argue.
Second paragraph: first argument to defend your thesis from the Bible directly (cite several times).
Third paragraph: second argument to defend your thesis from a secondary text (like The Visual Bible).
Fourth paragraph: defend your thesis using news of today as evidence (cite news and Bible as needed).
Fifth paragraph: express your arguments to explain the validity of your original thesis.
