Overview Many of our blindspots and prejudices come from the way you were raised

Overview
Many of our blindspots and prejudices come from the way you were raised and the environment in which you grew up. Like Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie (please watch video in link: https://vimeo.com/9575344?embedded=true&source=video_title&owner=2666152), you may have had a single story about a certain topic based on what you saw. She read books about little white children and “thought a thing” about those poorer than her family.
The books, music, videos, games, etc. to which children are exposed can be powerful tools to subtly reinforce certain ideas or challenge them.
Directions
Please visit the following page for an overview of the assignment: https://spark.adobe.com/page/mTalSTtkj6Tsw/
Find a children’s book that either reinforces or challenges “thinking a thing” like in the video.
A great example, you may remember from childhood is The Sneetches by Dr. Seuss with the Star-bellied Sneetches and Plain-bellied Sneetches, and helps students see the silliness of judging people by their appearance rather than their character.
Please model your discussion guide after this one for the Sneetches: https://www.learningtogive.org/resources/sneetches-literature-guide
Summarize the storybook.
Describe what idea is being challenged or promoted (can be things like “you always have something to give to those who are less fortunate than you are” or “kids with darker skin color are always the trouble makers”)
Create a discussion guide for parents/caregivers/teachers to talk about the ideas presented in the media and move children toward having a more open view of the world and less of a single story.
Create an activity that reinforces what you’re trying to teach the children.
What to Include
A single file (word document, powerpoint, or pdf) with:
A brief summary of the storybook.
A description of the idea that the story either challenges or promotes.
Your discussion guide to talk about the ideas presented, modeled after: https://www.learningtogive.org/resources/sneetches-literature-guide
