Paper #3: The Body Politic
After reading about the personal and the political, examine an issue of body politics from a rhetorical perspective. This could be about weight, shape, race, gender identity, sexuality, consent, sex, image, menses, sex work…but ultimately should examine rhetorical arguments around rights, roles, opportunities. As with our other papers, this should use two external sources and be written with an argument in mind. If there are readings or authors from our course that you wish to refer to, please do. The goal here is to analyze a perspective with which you agree or disagree – arguments made about women’s bodies.
Remember that this is an analysis of what OTHER women or groups are saying about issues of the body. It is not your own argument about the body. This work must look at past or current arguments using external sources.
Be careful – this is not an pop culture piece. Don’t look at representation of women in media unless the goal is to do so. The goal of the assignment is for you to be able to engage with arguments in the culture about women and their place. You’ve read enough to stimulate your thoughts…I look forward to hearing what you think about what others think.
