Hello everyone,
As we all are very much aware of the COVID-19 pandemic that we went through the past two years‘s caused much hysteria and uncertainty in healthcare organizations across the country. I know that my current organization is already having discussions about future strategic planning initiatives that have many variables depending if COVID-19 or to “re-develop“ it cost more issues.
With regard specifically to legislation, COVID-19 showed not only many in the healthcare sector the issues regarding Nursing patient ratios, but it also shows me that issue national news. Very often national cable news networks interviewed nurses and displayed information regarding how unsafe situations were a common occurrence in the hospital setting. National nursing shortage reform and patient advocacy act (congress.gov, 2022) was reintroduced into Congress in March. This act advocates for nurses and patients. The goal is to ensure that there are an adequate number of nurse is caring for the amount of patients out of particular unit.
This particular act was initially written in 2015, but many organizations have failed to properly supply their nurses with adequate staffing. The COVID-19 pandemic amplified these concerns and now healthcare organizations are taking a different look at how they can properly achieve their strategic planning process with the adequate staff required to care for their patient census.
Personally, I think staffing will be the number one concern for many organizations moving forward. There has been many reports of a large number of nurses leaving the workforce along with other healthcare providers/practitioners. We need to ensure that we have a safe amount of Staff and providers to care for our patients. At any given point we ourselves could be a patient and we would all want to ensure that the individuals caring for us are not overworked and put into a position where they can potentially make a life changing decision/mistake and one of us or our family members.
