Step 1: Complete the Communication Self-Assessment Questionnaire
Complete the following “Communication Self-Assessment.” You do not need to include this assessment in your paper as the goal is to be as honest with yourself as possible. Self-Assessment is attached.
Step 2: Answer the questions in bold in your paper.
After you have completed the Communication Self-Assessment, review the questions and your answers. Then, determine 4 categories that you can place the majority of your answers in. These categories are ones that make sense to you but be sure to explain why you chose those categories. For example, you may make a category of “Interactions With Those In Power” or “Interactions With Those Close to Me.”
What are your four categories?
Briefly explain why you selected these categories.
List and explain 2 -3 theories/models of communication that relate to your categories.
Chapter 1 covers 3 models of communication: Linear models, Interactive models, Transactional models.
Please use your notes, text, and lecture from Ch 1 to support PCAP 1. Please start there and reach out if you need more assistance.
How do these theories/models relate to or support your categories? (How do the ideas for your categories derive from or expand concepts introduced in these theories of models?)
What do your categories and your questions/answers to the self-assessment tell you about your communication strengths and challenges? (What assumptions are you making about what is good or bad about communication, about norms of communication that matter or don’t).
How do your communities or cultures impact the categories that you identified and what do you define as strong or weak/effective or ineffective communication behavior in those categories?
Think about a specific communication interaction that stands out in your mind because you felt you did not handle the interaction as well as you would have liked. Remember we define “effective” communication as the ability to:
Utilize a range of communication skills
Adapt communication appropriately
Engage in a dual perspective
Monitor your own communication
Commit to effective and ethical communication.
Using an autoethnographic lens (see information on How To Conduct and Autoethnographic Study See attached.
Download How To Conduct and Autoethnographic Study
) describe the communication interaction.
How did I handle a past challenging/difficult communication interaction?
What was the situation?
Which of the aforementioned elements of effective communication was missing??
What was the community context?
Who were the individuals involved?
What history led up to the interaction?
What specific life stage of my life did this occur? What was the life stage of the interaction partner? How did both of these particular life stages impact this interaction?
How did communication interaction demonstrate the transactional model of communication? What impact did both communication partners have on each other?
What were any assumptions that both interaction partners made?
How did your assumptions about the situation impact the individuals involved?
What were your emotional reactions to the situation? How did your emotional reactions impact the individuals and the situation in which the interaction happened?
What long-term impacts on the individuals and the larger community in which these individuals were in occurred because of this challenging communication interaction?
Now you have information from the three key points of data: (1) Communication Self-Assessment Questionnaire, (2) Communication Theories/Models, and (3) Autoethnography. These three sources of information should be used to inform your choice about which option you will do for PCAP 2.
Write one-two paragraph(s) that describes how you integrated the 3 pieces of information to inform your ultimate decision about which PCAP 2 project to undertake. This is your opportunity to show your critical thinking skills. It is an opportunity to thoughtfully study various data points, consider options, and then make an informed decision.
Information about PCAP 2 (The 3 Project Options) is listed in your AOD syllabus, starting on page 23 and ending on page 25
