My personal thoughts to add in the paper to help write the paper. I made it so it can be very personal to me.
This course had a lot of impact on my understanding
of social work. It has made me take a deeper look into myself and understand
the client on another level. I have learned about communication barriers a
client may have and how to assess a client best when those barriers arise. I
had the chance to watch several videos on how those barriers were shown and what
the next would be. I have had the opportunity to learn that anger is a
secondary emotion. Anger is fear and hurt.
Social work is an essential job. We know the code of ethics, so we can
best do our work. The principle of ethics keeps up in check to best help the
client.
My responsibility is to serve the client and use
my knowledge to advocate for them and anyone else that needs it. You must be
genuine, use empathy and respect the client and their privacy. To be genuine, do
the concept of the use of self. Use of self is critical. It is how you
use your life experiences or cultural. The framework used in social work is the
ecological model, systems theory, evidence-based practice, etc.
My experience with receiving feedback and
giving feedback has been great. It is a learning experience for me. I am always
eager to learn more, especially in this field of work. It is about listening,
being respectful, and being willing to adjust skills to best help the client. Throughout
the whole semester, I have had the opportunity to hear my peers and professor
give me feedback that was crucial to my learning. I was able to consider
everything and be a better social worker as I practiced in class and my video
projects.
Role plays felt easier on my end because I have
had to do role plays since the beginning of my journey at Simmons University in
May 2021. I was able to help my partner when needed, and we both were very
patient with each other. We worked very well with each other. Practicing consent
and confidentially was one of my main focuses because that is when you start to
build trust and rapport with a client.
My plan for the future is to continue my
learning on how to be a great social worker who is a leader and willing to
advocate even when it is hard. It will not be easy for a Haitian and black
woman, but there is no change without a person willing to do the hard work. I want
to stand for the minorities. I plan to keep practicing verbal following and
summarizing with multiple others to help a session follow and build rapport
with a client to get a better assessment and plan.
