Coates introduces the book as a message to his 15-year-old son. He speaks of being fearful for his son. After reading the first 50 pages of Coates, reading the Classism articles in your Reader, and watching the video: “Danger of a Single Story” by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, answer the following questions in an essay format. What synergies exist between these messages?
What differences are significantly notable?
In an analysis of Coates and Adichie, what action would they jointly take in spreading their message? How effective would this be given today’s rapid mode of communication?
What changes in the community / nation could they jointly impact?
Use specific quotes from Adams et al. (2013), Coates (2015), and Adichie’s video to support your thesis statement.
Use at least 5 vocabulary words from the Academic Word List in your Reader .
Use MLA format and cite your sources
You may incorporate other examples from your own experience, but remember to keep your essay in the 3rd person perspective.
Don’t forget to include a title at the top of your essay.
Think about the “message” you are trying to give the reader (in your thesis statement).
How are you going to close your essay? Consider summarizing your key points, making a prediction of the future, and/or asking the reader to consider a question – – – in your conclusion.
