This is a very weird paper to ask for. So my professor assigned us with four options, I’ve selected the prompt below:
2. Find a photograph, illustration, or advertisement in a historical magazine or newspaper that relates to a literary text we have read. How does the image illuminate your interpretation of the literary text and its treatment of the “true woman” or the “new woman”?
I will be attaching the image with the instructions but for this assignment I had a general idea which was,
The proposal that I have for this research essay is prompt two. I want to find either a photograph, illustration, or advertisement in a historical magazine or newspaper that relates to the reading “true woman”. I will try to articulate how the image that I select illuminates my interpretation of the reading “true woman” and how it treats what a “true woman” is defined as. To do this research essay I’m going to have to explain how the illustration that I’ve selected depicts what I believe Charlotte Perkins Gilman is describing as a new woman. As well, I’ll be using Gilman’s “True Woman” itself to help me describe what a new woman is considered and what being a true woman meant. But, I must also use two sources to do this and my sources are some strong sources in my opinion. I have two sources that I’ve found that I believe could be used to help me express what I feel Gilman’s reading about a new woman states. One of the sources I’ve found that speaks on both Gilman and another woman writer at the time is a strong source to use for this essay. The article is titled “The New Versus True Woman in Charlotte Perkins Gilman’s The Yellow Wallpaper and Ellen Glasgow’s Dare’s Gift” by Hussein H. Zeidanin and this article is discussing the differences between the new woman and the true woman similar to how I’m analyzing the same thing. But, most importantly this article speaks about how the idea had evolved and changed from true woman to new woman.
I’m hoping that you could use what I’ve just added as a way to get an idea of what I was trying to get across within the paper.
As far as sources go, the sources listed below are the only sources that can be used for this paper and they are all free upon searching them on google, for that’s how I found them.
