Program evaluation can be time consuming and resource-intensive to complete, but it is often necessary in order to ensure effectiveness. Evaluation design is really important, especially for smaller communities affected by the often limited availability of staff to conduct program analyses. It is equally important with any organization to first think about what is being evaluated, why you are evaluating it, and who your target audience is. Smaller communities would probably be forced to conduct single-group evaluations, since it is the simplest design. However, this design is also the weakest, so these communities may have low attribution and may not have clear answers to their evaluation questions. As well, these communities might consider using existing data and data that the program is already collecting. After identifying what data they already have, they can find what gaps in information they have that may help address the evaluation questions. Another thing that would help minimize resources needed would be to utilize the expertise of existing staff, rather than having to hire additional help that is not necessary (Minaya-Junca, 2018). Funders may require program evaluations from nonprofit organizations to either begin or continue funding the organization and/or program. There are several resources to aid nonprofits in evaluations, including the National Council of Nonprofits who help design and implement program evaluation. Some funders will also provide some resources to help with the process to meet their standards (What are Nonprofit Program evaluation methods? Grant writing 101, 2022).
