purpose of a persuasive speech is to reinforce attitudes, change
attitudes or motivate the audience to action. A persuasive speech is
the original
work of the speaker who takes a stand on one side of an issue and
attempts to convince or persuade the audience to agree with his/her
ideas. Present to the class a credible and convincing argument for or
against an issue. Topic should be manageable for the time limits,
appropriate for the class.
Prepare
a 5-7
minute
persuasive speech on a topic to change audience attitudes, reinforce
attitudes or motivate the audience to action. Choose a topic that
concerns a crucial issue, current event, serious problem, significant
idea, ethical or moral principle philosophical concept and/or legal
doctrine. Please try to choose current topics; you may also focus on
motivating the audience or changing a behavior.
Avoid
speech topics that deal with fixed beliefs like abortion, capital
punishment, religion, gay marriage, gun control, euthanasia and so
forth. People have spent many years deciding what they think about
these topics and you are not likely to change their minds in a short
speech.

Give
some thought as to how you want to organize your material. Review in
your text, chapter 24 and use whichever structure suits your topic
best. A statement of your position/perspective should be clear.
Include well-reasoned and persuasive arguments that are convincing
and appropriate to topic and purpose. Opposing viewpoints should be
combined within the argument.
This
speech will require considerable research to be convincing. Include
evidence in your speeches such as, examples, testimony and
statistics. Special emphasis should focus on the citation and
qualification of sources of evidence, including oral footnotes.
Research must be from credible and reliable sources.
A
minimum two-page outline using proper numbering and a bibliography
with three (3) written sources
