Task 8 – Reasoning Cont’d.
Last week you had an opportunity to put your critical thinking into action. This week’s task allows you to further implement some of those skills. Here you get to examine a couple of scenarios and think critically about it. Ultimately, the key is to help you realize that problems can be solved in a variety of ways, and to distinguish between valid/invalid and probable/improbable conclusions.
From the content below, pick out the key, or primary, question and WHY!
Bees across the United States have been dying for seemingly unexplained reasons. The death of the bees is of pressing concern, because the bees are necessary for pollinating many of the fruit and vegetable plants that we rely on for food. As a result many agricultural scientists are searching for the cause of such large scale bee death. The scientists know that the bee deaths have risen since the 1950s, and acknowledge that without some kind of human intervention serious consequences for agriculture will likely result. The scientists wish to avoid the possible consequences, without making too many changes to the existing system of bee pollination.
Given the facts of this scenario, identify which ONE or TWO of the following best exemplifies the question, or questions, the agricultural scientists should be asking? Be sure to include in depth rationale for your choice(s) as well as how you got to your conclusion.
A.) Why weren’t the bees dying in such numbers before the 1950s?
B.) Would it be possible to replace the bees with some kind of robotic drone, and how much would such drones cost?
C.) How can the death of the bees be stopped or reduced?
D.) What is causing so many bees to die now, and how can the deaths be averted so that bees can continue to pollinate crops?
From the content below, pick out the primary problem that creates further problems and why.
Stephen is aggravated because he cannot watch his favorite television show tonight. His television will not turn on. Stephen’s aggravation at not being able to watch his favorite show resulted in him yelling at his brother for making too much noise. As a result of Stephen yelling at his brother, he was grounded and sent to his room. Since he was grounded he was not able to go out with his friends later, as he had planned. The next morning Stephen discovered that his television was not plugged in.
Given the facts of this scenario, identify which ONE or TWO of the following what was the primary source for all of Stephen’s problems?? Be sure to include in depth rationale for your choice(s) as well as how you got to your conclusion.
A.) His little brother making too much noise.
B.) His TV was not plugged in.
C.) His parent’s lack of sympathy for his state of aggravation.
D.) His inability to escape from his room via the window.
