According to John Holland (1997), people are attracted to a
particular career by their unique personalities. People who exhibit
certain values and particular personality traits are a good match with certain
career areas. Holland has identified six worker personality types, and his
typology is widely used as the basis for books on career development,
vocational tests used in career counseling centers, and self-help approaches
for making career decisions.
As you read the descriptions of Holland’s six personality types,
take the time to think about the patterns that fit you best. Remember that most
people do not fall neatly into one category but have characteristics from
several types. When you come across a phrase that describes you, put a check
mark in the space provided. Then look again at the six personality types and
select the three types (in rank order) that best describe the way you see
yourself. As you become more aware of the type of person you are, you can apply
these insights in your own career decision-making process. Complete the
