Action Research Capstone Project
Throughout this program, you will complete a multisection action research capstone project. This project will support you in becoming a reflective and scholarly practitioner in your own classroom or school environment as you use your existing knowledge of teaching practice to shape an inquiry question. Through action research, teachers have an opportunity to evaluate themselves, analyzing their own teaching practices and their effect on students, collegiality, and overall school improvement. Using a cyclical process of identifying a problem, data analysis, reflection, and action, teachers can refine their teaching practices, impact student learning, and affect positive social change.
In each of your MAT EE courses, you will complete one assignment related to action research. Some of these assignments will help prepare and support you in completing your Capstone Project.
In the courses listed below, you will complete one section of the Capstone Project. You will use instructor feedback to improve each section of the project and submit your final project in the last course of the program, EDUC 6030 Demonstration Teaching. You will use the Capstone Project template to submit assignments and add each section as you progress through the courses. Please submit the full template each time you complete a portion of the project. When the template is complete at the end of the program, you will make final edits based on the feedback you have received and submit it to your ePortfolio. The Action Research Capstone Project consists of four narratives:
Section I: EDUC 6401-Topic and Research Question—You will analyze the methodology of action research and identify a burning question/topic that focuses on improving teacher practice and P-12 student learning.
Section II: EDUC 6052 & EDUC 6053—Annotated Bibliography and Literature Review—You will conduct a systematic quality search of the literature on your specific topic or question. There are 2 parts to this section an annotated bibliography and a literature review.
Section III: EDUC 6054—Analyzing Data—You will identify multiple data sources and design a plan of action for collecting, triangulating, and analyzing the data.
Section IV: EDUC 6010—Reflection and Impact on Social Change—You will reflect on your overall research, implication for future research, and its impact on education and social change.
Planning ahead:
During action research, teachers take on the role of teacher-researcher, engaging in a cyclical process to improve their practice and overall student performance. The Action Research Capstone Project Template contains the directions for each section of the project. Review the directions for each section prior to beginning your project. This will help you organize your efforts and plan your work.
