Advocacy Priorities

Identifying barriers and challenges that impact vulnerable and marginalized groups is an important first step, but advocates cannot stop there. What can be done to address the inequities, the challenges, and the barriers? How might an advocate use policy to enact change?

The Allegory of the Orchard  required you to consider the barriers and challenges of specific vulnerable or marginalized populations. In our Week 1 Discussion, you identified a specific population connected to your practice, organization, or experience. This week you will explore that population further by determining a specific advocacy priority for the population.

• Review your selected population discussed in the Module 1, Week 1 Discussion: Allegory of the Orchard.
• Review the resources on vulnerable or marginalized populations.
• Consider the factors that create and maintain these populations.
• Reflect on nursing’s relationship with these populations and how this shapes our role in policy advocacy.

By Day 3 of Week 2

Using the selected population discussed in the Week 1 Discussion: Allegory of the Orchard, post a response detailing the following:

• What are the advocacy priorities for the population? What are the needs of this population?
• How are disparities reflected in policy and policy reflected in the disparities?
• What is the role of nursing, individually and collectively, in influencing policy decisions that adversely impact vulnerable populations?

Step-by-Step Writing Guide

1. Start with the Population You Chose in Week 1

   • Identify the vulnerable or marginalized group you discussed in the Allegory of the Orchard activity.

   • Briefly describe who they are and why they are considered vulnerable (e.g., limited access to care, systemic discrimination, socioeconomic barriers).

2. Define the Advocacy Priorities

   • List the most urgent needs of your chosen population (e.g., access to mental health care, culturally competent services, affordable medications).

   • Connect these needs to broader issues of equity and justice.

3. Explain the Needs in Detail

   • Support your points with evidence from the weekly resources and outside sources (APA style).

   • Use at least five academic sources from the last five years to demonstrate credibility.

4. Discuss Policy and Disparities

   • Explain how disparities are reflected in policy (for example, limited Medicaid coverage, underfunding, restrictive eligibility criteria).

   • Show how policy also reinforces those disparities, creating cycles of disadvantage.

5. Highlight Nursing’s Role

   • Individually: nurses can advocate directly for patients, educate them about rights, and connect them with resources.

   • Collectively: nursing organizations can lobby, participate in policy committees, and influence legislation.

   • Link back to the idea of political determinants of health from Dawes (2020).

6. Organize Your Paper

   • Introduction: Introduce the population and the purpose of your advocacy.

   • Body Paragraphs:

     • Needs of the population.

     • Advocacy priorities.

     • Policy and disparities.

     • Nursing’s role.

   • Conclusion: Summarize advocacy strategies and stress the importance of nursing involvement.

7. Cite and Reference Properly

   • Use APA 7th edition in-text citations for all evidence.

   • Add a reference list with full citations.
