Area 51 Conspiracy Theory – Topic – Research Paper
A literature review is a little bit like an annotated bibliography. It shows me some of the sources you plan to use in your research paper, proves to me that you have closely read through them enough to understand the key points, and explains briefly how each source adds to a point you’re planning to make. Be sure to discuss what questions you plan to raise in order to prove your points about a problem you see and a solution you (and other scholars) have suggested.
Unlike an annotated bibliography, a literature review takes an essay format, divided into four clear sections and containing a complete, MLA-formatted Works Cited page. Complete a literary review on at least five articles, book chapters, or other scholarly sources you plan to use in your research paper (including at least one which disagrees with your main point).
The first section is your introduction (1 paragraph): explain the purpose of your research and whom or what your problem affects, and discuss what you wish to explore in your research paper.
The second section is your summary (2-3 paragraphs): sum up what each article is about, organized by topic. For example, if you are going to discuss racism in education, you might divide this subject into the topics of underfunded inner-city public schools, familial expectations of students of color, and lack of access to research, summarizing how each text you’ve chosen addresses each topic.
The third section is your discussion and evaluation (2-3 paragraphs): explore how you plan to use these articles in your research paper, and define how effective each one is in helping you prove your point. Which articles might be more effective than others? Are there any questions that still haven’t been answered by the sources you’ve compiled? What ideas still need to be explored?
The fourth section is your conclusion (1 brief paragraph): this is where you work on fine-tuning your thesis statement. As a result of what you’ve researched, what do you feel is the most important point to take away from the work you’ve done? The work your sources have done? If applicable, what kind of lenses will you use to dissect the subject at hand?
