Counseling
1) Consider the following case study:
Larissa is a 14‐year‐old who was born in Mexico but has lived legally in the
United States for the last 5 years. She asked to speak to the school counselor
because she and her parents have been experiencing more conflict lately because
she wants to do more with her friends, especially on weekends, and her parents
want her to attend family functions with them. They say she can have her friends
come to her house, but she is reluctant to invite them because her parents
don’t speak much English. She says she wants to be respectful of her parents
but thinks they don’t understand what it is like for her. As
the counselor, what developmental and
cultural factors are relevant to this
case? How would you incorporate these factors into your counseling approach
with this client? 2)
Describe three major
changes for each stage of development: early childhood, middle childhood, early
adolescence and mid-adolescence. Cite developmental theories and address any of
these areas – self, social, emotional, and cognitive. 3) Discuss three resiliency traits
that positively impact student learning and development and their relationship
to Social Emotional Learning core competencies. Component #2: Individual Counseling Process
1)
Discuss the stages of the individual counseling process according to Vernon
& Schimmel (Chapter 2) when working with hypothetical student Nancy, a
12-year-old adolescent who was recently adopted from the foster care system and
is having difficulties with her new younger siblings. Also, identify community
opportunities/resources that might enhance her transition to a new home. 2) How would you explain
counseling in lay terms, to meet the needs of individuals with a varied range
of cognitive, emotional, or social developmental levels? What considerations
might you take when explaining counseling to an individual from another
culture, whose first language is different from your own? Why is it important
to explain counseling to your students? (see ASCA Ethical Standards for School
Counselors, ASCA, 2016)
3) Discuss termination issues related to counseling
children and adolescents, citing at least six strategies that can potentially
help both counselor and student to end the counseling relationship
appropriately. * Attach an informed consent form
that a school counselor would use in the school in counseling children and
adolescents.
Component #3: Ethical Considerations and
Theoretical Approaches
1)
What theoretical orientation(s) will you primarily use when counseling students
and why? Describe some key concepts and techniques that you will use associated
with those theories. Identify how you considered culture in your theoretical
orientation choices. How would you approach issues of worldview and faith in
your counseling sessions with a student in a secular counseling school setting?
(Use at least one article identified in this course to support your actions
with regard to addressing spirituality and other multicultural issues.)
2)
What are the legal and ethical concerns when working with a 7-year-old minor student
who was referred for counseling by his or her teacher? When would you have to breach
confidentiality and what obligations do you have to your young student with
regard to privacy? Will you contact the student’s parent? When is a referral to
outside resources warranted? Specifically
cite applicable ASCA Ethical Standards for School Counselors (ASCA, 2016).
3)
Describe one creative approach you would use with students in your school
(play therapy, expressive/art therapy,
sand tray therapy, etc.). · Component

awareness, knowledge, and skills regarding counseling diverse youth? Discuss 2
multicultural competencies in relation to student learning and development,
diversity, culture, and spiritual/religious beliefs.
2) Discuss 3 culturally appropriate
counseling interventions that have been proven effective when working with
children and adolescents from diverse cultures.

effective part of the school counseling program. Give 3 scenarios where
transition programming would be beneficial for students and explain why. *Attach your Honoring Diversity and
Transitions Presentation in this component in LiveText. Component #5: Counseling At-Risk
Children/Adolescents
1) Define the 4-step framework for
working with at-risk children and adolescents presented in Chapter 11 of Vernon
& Schimmel (2019), and then discuss two types of interventions you would
utilize when intervening in the following problems faced by children and
adolescents at risk:
a) Substance
abuse & addiction
b) Depressive
or
anxiety disorders 2) Crisis Planning and Management
o What is the purpose and importance of a
crisis management plan? What type of information is found in a crisis
management plan?
