Task Summary
You will develop an 800-word Critical Literature Review Proposal on a topic of your choice related to
your Health discipline. This proposal will provide the preliminary groundwork for the Critical Literature
Review that you will undertake in Assessment 1 Part A.
Please refer to the Task Instructions for details on how to complete this task.
Context
In this assessment you will apply your research skills to identify current developments, methods and
skills appropriate to your Health discipline and begin to evaluate the literature and synthesise the
evidence. Presenting your research topic, search methods and initial search findings will prepare you
to undertake your Assessment 2 Part A: Written Critical Literature Review.
Task Instructions
In the critical literature review proposal, you are to select a topic that is within the scope of practice
of the discipline you are studying, locate and select a minimum of eight references and outline the
following:
CLR308_Assessment_1_Brief_Critical Literature Review Proposal_Module Due 2.2 Page 2 of 9
1. The research topic with justification/reasoning on your choice of topic
2. The set inclusion and exclusion criteria
3. Relevant key words used to search the databases
4. The databases searched to find the published literature
An Appendix (template provided) containing:
5. Relevant key words in PICO format
6. Example of a database search record
7. Table with selected research papers identifying PICO
Important: Do a preliminary search on your topic to check that material is available; otherwise you
must choose another topic, as you will not have enough to write about.
Discussion board activity
Once you have selected your topic, please create a thread in ‘Assessment 1 – Critical Literature
Review Proposal’ forum, on the discussion board and clearly outline your topic including identifying
each of the PICO elements by 11:55pm AEDT/AEST Sunday of Module 1.2 (Week 2). If your topic
choice or PICO could be improved your facilitator will contact you by 11:55pm AEDT/AEST on
Wednesday of Module 2.1 (Week 3). This activity is not graded. The student is responsible for posting
their topic by Sunday of Module 1.2 if they would like to check with their facilitator. The facilitator
will not comment on the topics posted after Sunday of Module 2.1. Please do not post your final
assessment 1 submission on the discussion board. Assessment 1 has to be submitted in the
assessment area on Blackboard.
1. The review topic:
The objective of the review is to be in the form of a clearly “focused” research question. It is
currently accepted that a question that is clearly focused is asked in terms of PICO:-
The population or problem
The intervention
Comparator/s
Outcome/s.
2. Inclusion and exclusion criteria:
In order to conduct a critical literature review, you need to locate the most recent (ideally the last
5 to 10 years) and relevant published research literature on the topic in question.
In order to select appropriate research papers for inclusion in the review, specific inclusion and
exclusion criteria should be specified with justification for their selection.
CLR308_Assessment_1_Brief_Critical Literature Review Proposal_Module Due 2.2 Page 3 of 9
Inclusion criteria are characteristics that the prospective participants must have if they are
to be included in the study, while exclusion criteria are those characteristics that disqualify
prospective participants from inclusion in the study. Inclusion and exclusion criteria may
include factors such as age, sex, race, ethnicity, type and stage of disease, the subject’s
previous treatment history, and the presence or absence of other medical, psychosocial, or
emotional conditions.
3. Relevant key words:
In order to locate relevant research papers for inclusion in their critical review, you must
consider different keywords and key word strategies with which to conduct their database
search.
4. Databases:
Research literature must be sourced from peer reviewed journals and primary sources where
possible. Information may be sourced from primary, secondary and tertiary sources for use
as background information to support the literature review:
Primary sources:
Include original research articles, systematic reviews and meta-analysis from high quality
journals such as the British Medical Journal, Lancet, New England Journal of Medicine, etc.
Secondary sources:
Include general review articles, summaries and abstracts of primary source articles.
Tertiary sources:
Include recognised, authoritative textbooks.
You are strongly recommended to:
1. Use primary sources wherever possible and use the most recently published
information you can find.
2. Use secondary sources only where primary sources cannot be accessed.
3. Use tertiary sources only when primary or secondary source journals are not
available. All texts should be by experts recognised in their particular field. Make
sure you consult the latest edition of the text.
4. Never use lecture notes, manufacturers’ information sheets, magazine or
newspaper articles, anecdotal reports, non-reputable internet/web sites, selfhelp groups, practitioners’ recommendations.
5. Use websites as a guide to primary sources. Websites should not be used unless
they belong to reputable sources e.g. Government, official organizations or
recognised medical association journal sites.

5. Appendix A – PICO search terms
Organise search terms into a table to demonstrate a structured comprehensive research approach as per example
below:

| Low* back pain Or |
McKenzie Or | Exercise* Or | Pain Or | Function* Or | Quality of life Or |
| LBP Or | McKenzie method Or |
Physical exercise* Or |
Pain scale Or |
ADLs Or | QOL Or |
| Lumbar pain Or | MDT Or |
Dynamic exercise* Or |
Visual analogue scale Or |
Activit* of daily living Or |
Health related quality of life Or |
| Lumbago | McKenzie protocol Or |
Static exercise* Or |

6. Appendix B – Database search record
Using the search terms identified in Appendix A complete a database search using the following formula:
Search #1 Population- combine search terms using OR
Search #2 Intervention – combine search terms using OR
Search #3 Comparator – combine search terms using OR
Search #4 Outcomes – combine search terms using OR (may have more than 1 outcome measure)
Search #5 Combine results from each search using AND (#1 AND #2 AND #3 AND #4)
| Database searched | Key words used | Search Results |
| PubMed | Low back pain OR Mckenzie | 46247 |
| PubMed | Low back pain AND Mckenzie | 174 |
7. Appendix C – Table summarizing selected studies using the following format and headings:

2011 | Supervised exercise, spinal manipulation and home exercise for chronic low back pain: a randomized clinical trial |
The purpose of this study was to assess the relative efficacy of supervised ex, spinal manipulation and HEP for Rx of CLBP. |
RCT. An observer blinded & mixed method randomized clinical trial |
301 Pts 18 to 65 years with primary complaint of mechanical LBP for > 6- weeks with or without radiating pain to the lower extremity |
High-dose, supervised low-tech trunk exercise, chiropractic soft tissue massage, & a short course of home exercise & self-care advice treatment LBP |
for of |
High-dose, supervised low-tech trunk exercise and chiro SMT |
Patient rated outcomes = pain, disability, general health, meds used, global Improvement, & satisfaction. Trunk muscle endurance & strength |
All 3 groups = outcomes improved over 12 weeks of treatment. Supervised trunk ex. Pts most satisfied w/ care & experienced greatest gains in trunk muscle endurance & stren gth but not significant over other treatments for pain |
For chronic LBP, supervised exercise was significantly better than chiropractic spinal manipulations & home exercise in terms of satisfaction with treatment & trunk muscle endurance |
