Week 2 assignment**********
1. Why does this theory best fit your style and approach?
The Goal-Setting Theory of Locke and Latham is the best suit for my style and approach. Whatever the situation, I always establish goals for myself to assist encourage me to do my best and focus on the end goal. This goal-setting theory includes, “setting challenging and specific goals, providing feedback once those goals are accomplished, accepting and being committed to the goals at hand, prioritizing goals, and providing awards for goal accomplishment” (Uhl-Bien et al., 2020) All five principles were a perfect fit for my personality and work ethic. I always ask for clarification when given a new task if I don’t fully understand what is expected of me; I ask for specific challenging tasks that are outside of my comfort zone so that I can not only challenge myself but also learn as much as possible in every position; I accept every task that is assigned to me regardless of how long it will take or how much I already have on my plate; I ask for feedback whenever I can. Finally, I take on tasks that are constantly changing. If I make a mistake, I want to know what went wrong and how to avoid it in the future. Because I work in human resources, laws, rules, and guidelines are constantly changing. I like my job because I don’t like doing the same things over and over again, and I don’t want to get bored with what I do.
2. Explain why the other theories do not fit your approach to motivation (two to three sentences for each theory will suffice).
Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs- According to this theory, you require physiological (food and clothing), safety (work security), love and belonging (friendship), esteem, and self-actualization. I didn’t choose this notion because I believe that you control your own destiny and can make it whatever you want it to be. I don’t believe that all of the needs are required to be a great worker and operate in society.
Alderfer’s ERG Theory- Existence (E), relatedness (R), and growth (G)-This idea did not appeal to me since, like the other, there is no evidence that these basic wants must be addressed, and there is no fixed benchmark for these demands in order to be successful. I didn’t choose this since you don’t need to be able to relate to ordinary work duties to complete them successfully.
McClelland’s Manifest Needs Theory- The main reason I did not choose this theory is Because achievement is depending on the person, I did not choose this theory. Not everyone requires higher ambitions, and the majority of people are content to remain in the same position for long periods of time.
Lawrence & Nohria’s Emotional Drives or Needs Theory- This theory does not appeal to me because emotional motivation and/or needs are unique to each person. Because each person is unique, their requirements differ. This is not a requirement for professional success.
Vroom’s Expectancy Theory-“According to Vroom’s theory, if expectancy, instrumentality, or valence is equal to zero, there will be no employee motivation.”
This is not a theory I choose. In all workplaces, there is no direct link between performance and pay. People perform well when they can, but this does not guarantee them any type of reward.
3. How does your theory relate to your personality?
My theory fits my personality because I am self-motivated, don’t let others dictate my decisions, and do what I think is best for me. My fate is in my hands.
