Directions, Rubric, and some examples are included here, underneath is a note about length
As noted on the Paper #4 assignment sheet, our audience for Paper #4 is The New York Times (www.nytimes.com) readership. When you wrote Paper #3 (RAR), you had to consider to whom Jones or Roy or Brown were writing/speaking. In order to do that and to consider in what ways their rhetorical devices and stylistic techniques were effective, you most likely looked at the original context (where and when the article was published or the speech was first given) in order to determine the target audience. You might have looked at the magazine’s Media Kit or About Us, page for example.
As you approach Paper #4, you’ll want to consider who the typical reader of The New York Times.com might be. We read several essays from The New York Times as well to help you get a sense of the creative range of ways in which writers got their ideas across.
Paper #4 is the culmination of our Comp II class where we have studied several authors’ techniques and how those techniques were employed in order to make compelling arguments. In Paper #4, you’re showcasing your skills of working with stylistic devices, tone, diction, rhetorical devices, etc. in order to convince The New York Times audience of your ideas.
A few students have emailed regarding the Paper #4 length requirements. As noted on the Paper #4 assignment sheet, the required minumum length is 1.5 pages in New York Times style (image(s)/Notes don’t count toward content-length).
Body paragraphs are in Georgia font/11.5 font size/1.15 spacing within paragraphs/2 single spaces between paragraphs.
My suggestion is to write the opinion guest essay content using the above-noted spacing prior to putting in the image so that you know that you have the required minimum length of 1.5 pages in New York Times style.
The maximum length is around 2 pages in New York Times style (not including image(s)/Notes).
