Term Research Paper
Based on the approved research paper topic and thesis
statement, identify the reason why you think that the issue is
essential, frame the issue(s) to be researched, select relevant sources,
research and analyze the issues presented, and communicate the solution
(or recommended response) to the problem. The paper should not be an
Do not merely describe the subject of your paper. The paper can
include some description, but should also analyze, ask “why?” discuss
consequences and effects, make an argument supported by evidence and
reasoning, and otherwise demonstrate thoughtful analysis of your chosen
subject — analysis that shows your thinking on the subject and does not
merely repeat what the sources tell you. The most robust papers
generally draw from the descriptions and analyses of various sources.
They then proceed to present their own coherent argument and conclusions
on the subject — conclusions supported by evidence and reasoning.
As noted above, the research paper can be approached in several ways.
The following ideas are for those students having difficulty organizing
material into a cohesive paper.
Students can write a paper, which provides a brief background of the
topic, a review of the research that has been conducted, the
consequences or effects of the issue/topic, offer a meaningful argument
or resolution based on the evidence, and provide thoughtful
recommendations for future directions.
Students need to narrow their focus by identifying and describing a
particular trend or pattern found in the literature. Moreover, students
may narrow their focus by examining an issue across gender, race, or
ethnic considerations or local matters.
The paper should be no less than 8-typed pages. Below are three
extremely important steps you must follow. Failure to adhere to one (or
more) of the three steps will result in a point reduction.
STEP 1: To avoid redundancy and similarity of topics among students,
you must submit your first choice for a topic for the research paper AND
at least TWO alternate topics to me. I (not you) will then select the
topic for you to research. The three topics for the research paper
should be submitted in the appropriate assignment dropbox located inside
fo Canvas. After submission, I will send you the selected topic via
grade feedback. Please note the timely submission of the research topics
is worth two (2) points of the 20 maximum points available for the
research paper. Failure to submit this assignment timely will
automatically result in an automatic 2-point reduction on your research
STEP 2: You must also submit a thesis statement/problem statement
along with eight references in the appropriate assignment dropbox.
Please note, timely submission of the thesis statement is worth three
(3) points of the 20 maximum points available for the research paper.
Failure to submit this assignment timely will automatically result in an
automatic 3-point reduction on your research paper.
STEP 3: The final version of the paper must be submitted online in
the Canvas Assignment Dropbox titled, ‘Term Research Paper’. Please note
the timely submission of the research paper in the designated
assignment dropbox is worth fifteen (15) points of the 20 maximum points
available for the research paper.
The paper should be double spaced, properly formatted, and the body
of the paper not be shorter than the stipulated number of pages (in this
case, 8-eight). Cover, abstract, reference pages, etc. do not count for
purposes of the length of the paper. It must have pagination (pages
should be consecutively numbered at the bottom-in Word click on the
Insert icon on the top masthead to insert page numbers.) You should have
at least eight references from academic journals/texts (i.e., equal to
the number of pages required for the paper). Wikipedia is NOT an
educational source. All and any references from the course texts will
together only count as one, so you need to get external references.
APA Citation Format Policy
It is very important that you learn how to cite appropriately. In
some ways, citations are more important than the actual text of your
paper/assignment. Therefore, you should take this task seriously and
devote some time to understanding how to cite appropriately. If you take
the time to understand this process upfront, it will save you a
significant amount of time in the long run (not to mention substantial
deductions in points). In the social and behavioral sciences (including
Criminal Justice), we use APA (American Psychological Association)
format. As a rule of thumb, one cites whenever they are ten paraphrasing
other people’s words or when they quote other’s words directly. You may
learn to cite from a variety of different sources including the APA
Tutorial and the sources listed below.
I will grade the papers based upon style, content, and references.
Style: Is the paper well-structured? Are grammar
and spelling correct? Are references cited correctly in the text and at
the end? Is the paper a pleasure to read? I strongly recommend that
you write your paper a few days early and let it sit so that you can
review it with a fresh eye. It is also a good idea to get input from a
friend or from a tutor at the Writer’s Center.
Content and references: Do you cover the most
important points of the issue? Do you have up-to-date information?
Were you able to locate the most important sources of information for
your topic? Please see me well before the deadline if you are having
trouble locating sources.
Specific APA style information:

AVOID SLANG. USE PROFESSIONAL LANGUAGE
“conducted a study” instead of “did a study” “examined” instead of “looked at”
“utilize” instead of “use” (where appropriate) “great deal” instead of “a lot”
“furthermore” instead of run-on sentences
ORGANIZE THE PAPER BY TOPICS NOT CHRONOLOGY: Build paper with a clear
thesis. Good writing should provide clear and organized evidence for
your argument or theory.
BE CONSICE: Delete unnecessary words, phrases, and sentences to
drastically improve your writing. Scientific writing is concise and
REVISE AND REWRITE: Good writing takes hard work. Give yourself
enough time to take a break from the paper. Time away from the paper
provides perspective regarding organization and allows the opportunity
to find technical errors.
CITATIONS: It is imperative that you use good citation habits. It is plagiarism to use other writers’ words and IDEAS.
