Nursing consists of an interdisciplinary collaboration between healthcare providers to supply the best patient care. I like to say that nurses are the constant eye of the doctor. We are the ones that are attentive to our patients 24/7. We see when our patient has developed a new symptom, how the patient is progressing with treatment, or how they continue to deteriorate. Nurses are the ones who call the doctor when something is not correct. We are the ones that implement the plan of care daily, yet without the team, there would not be a plan of care. Based on the SBAR, we constantly give recommendations on what we think is best for our patients, but it is not within our scope of practice to implement them without orders. Doctors provide a different type of knowledge and can write orders for other healthcare team members. Based on the patient’s condition, different specialized doctors will jump in on the care of these patients. Each healthcare provider team provides a second set of eyes on the patient’s condition, decreasing the chances of medical errors. A medical team promotes communication and increases patient safety. “Interdisciplinary team rounds that take place at the bedside improve both nursing satisfaction and related communication markers of quality and safety, and may help to achieve higher nurse retention and safer patient care. These results point to the interconnectedness and dual benefit to both job satisfaction and patient quality of care that can come from enhancements to team communication.”( Gausvik C, Lautar A, Miller L, Pallerla H, & Schlaudecker J. 2015). I am a Neonatal Intensive Care Unit nurse. Everything that we do revolves around teamwork. We have residents, fellows, attendings, nurses, respiratory therapists, physical therapists, occupational therapists, speech therapists, radiologists, x-ray technicians, laboratory technicians, pharmacists, and more in the NICU. We all work together to treat and help our patients become the best they can be. Without the healthcare team, there would be chaos. For example, one of my patients had a fever and vomiting with a distended abdomen. I reported my finding to the doctor, who ordered labs and an x-ray. An x-ray technician shortly came by and sent the x-ray to the radiologist. From there, the radiologist reaches out to the doctor with suggestions. Labs are sent to the lab, where the laboratory technician reports critical lab values. As a team, we worked hard and came together to find the cause of the findings and treatment of choice. Every one of us plays an essential part in the quality of care provided. “Interdisciplinary collaboration involves healthcare delivery that maximizes the strengths and skills of each member of the team.”(Peek, G. K., & Campbell, U. 2020). Teamwork and increased communication between the healthcare teams has proven increased patient and employee satisfaction, and reduced healthcare costs (Peek, G. K., & Campbell, U. 2020). I am confident that nursing is a professional partnership with other disciplines. Teamwork benefits both the healthcare providers and patients.
