Purpose and Expectations
By completing this assignment:
- You will individually write and develop a java program to meet functional requirements applying event driven programming
- You will further develop your version control experience (you are encouraged to use a GitHub repository to maintain your A GitHub classroom assignment link will be provided in Moodle).
- You will develop your understanding of and apply event driven programming In particular you will use the Swing package to create a GUI and implement interfaces to respond to (listen to) events triggered on the GUI.
It is expected that you will creatively design and update a system based on appropriate individual design choices that address the requirements listed in the marking rubric. Before you submit, read over the entire assignment, understand all the tasks and make sure you have addressed the specific requirements detailed in the rubric.
All code must conform to stylistic conventions including proper commenting, appropriate choice of identifier names (including case), proper indentation and other readability issues. If the code does not follow consistent style and formatting standards, marks will be deducted. For examples of coding style guides, please consult:

- Evans & Flanagan (2015), Chapter 7
General Requirements
Demonstrate an understanding of particular concepts covered in lectures, workshops, laboratories and reading to provide the details requested. This may require further reading and research beyond the material discussed in class.
Assessment Details
This assignment will be assessed by your lecturer/tutor. The assignment is an individual assignment.
Each student must make a submission in Moodle.
The submission will be in the form of a zip file that contains the student’s java project from Eclipse that satisfies the assignment requirements.
In this assignment, each student is to design and create a GUI window that will replace the Calculate a Property Type’s Yearly Rates Total text based dialog of the Council Rate Payer System used in lab assignments 1 and 2.
Each student should be available, if required to demonstrate and answer questions about the code they have written.
Further information is given in the following section and in the Marking Criteria and Rubric sections of this document.
Detailed Requirements
Each student is encouraged to use GitHub. Please consult the creating your own project in eclipse and then associating with GitHub.pdf document under the Course Resources heading of the Course Information section of your Moodle shell. You should make a copy of your existing project code in Eclipse and use the instructions in the document to save to a local Git repository and upload to an individual remote GitHub one within the GitHub classroom. A GitHub classroom assignment link will be provided in Moodle.
You need to mimic the functionality of the existing Calculate a Property Type’s Yearly Rates Total text based dialog and present it as a GUI window. Think about the following:
- You might need to change the validation depending on how you present information and how you process For example do you want to validate at the end of all entry or on each field? This may be taken out of your hands depending on how you design your GUI and since there are not too many fields to validate.
- You need to think about how you present selection information – do you provide a drop down, combo box or radio buttons or use some other mechanisms (Remember there are particular requirements in the marking rubric that need to be satisfied)?
- What appropriate labels do you need?
- How do you group information?
- Remember you need to present the calculation results in some way in your GUI; maybe that would be a text display box or some other You need to provide the same level of detail that is provided in the original dialog.
- You need to follow good interface design principles including consistency of font types, sizes and

In your design and coding, you need to satisfy the marking rubric requirements. As well as good GUI design, the screen must still work to accept the appropriate input from a user and to then correctly calculate the yearly rates for that property type.
