Writing Task
Write a proposal or causal argument paper on an arguable issue that is, ideally, related
to the topic and issue that you explored for the I-search essay. Your topic should be
sufficiently narrowed, and your research question re-expressed as an arguable
thesis
that expresses a claim and provides the reader with a sense of the direction and scope
of the topic.
Your
introduction
should provide necessary background information about the issue,
draw your reader’s attention, establish your credibility, and clearly state your position as
a thesis (causal or proposal).
The
body
of your argument will briefly summarize and respond to (rebut or concede)
counterarguments but focus on presenting reasons and evidence in support of your
position. You need to choose whether to summarize and refute opposing views before
or after you have made your own case or to intermix the two components. The essay
needs to avoid using first-person singular (“I”) and second person (“you”), but if you use
personal experience or examples, it is entirely appropriate to use “I” when relating that
experience.
Your paper needs to have a clear purpose with ample detail to support this purpose.
Your ideas should be arranged in a logical, coherent, rhetorically effective sequence and
demonstrate stylistic maturity and grammatical correctness.
Causal arguments should follow one of the organizational patterns outlined in Figures
13.4, 13.5, or 13.6 on pp. 264-65. Proposal arguments should follow the pattern in
Figure 15.3 on p. 231. Your thesis may be supported by a combination of any of the four
claim types—definition/resemblance, causal, evaluation/ethical, and/or proposal—but
your thesis must be expressed as a causal or proposal argument.
The
conclusion
should present a sense of closure and briefly explore the implications of
your position.
Notes
You are required to use the note-taking rubric, which can be downloaded from the
Essays and Research Paper Module.
All note pages must be submitted with your final
paper and will count in your final paper grade.
Sources and Citations
Your essay should use a
minimum of SIX different sources.
Anticipate that you will seek
out about twice that many sources since some of the ones you find will not be relevant
or reliable. In other words, do not simply choose and read the first materials that you
find on your topic.
You must cite these six sources either by quotation or paraphrase in MLA style. No
more than two block quotations are permitted. See

incorporating your sources into your argument and

Chapter 18, and the MLA
section of
WR
(starting on p. 405) for proper MLA citation format.
Your sources must include at least TWO scholarly, peer-reviewed articles and ONE book.
Your other sources may be additional scholarly articles, books, magazine, or newspaper
articles, and/or websites .edu, .gov., and/or org. (with instructor’s approval), TEDTalks,
or news websites/videos.
Blogs, .com websites, encyclopedias, and reference works
(such as those found on CREDO database) may not be used.

Written argument, to be effective, not only involves passion and enthusiasm. It
also requires complexity of thoughts, preparation, and sustained attention.
Such
writing must be built systematically, conflicting positions examined, one’s own
developing views related to those of others, evidence generated and then sifted
through, generalizations critiqued, audience taken into account, questions of
essay structure considered. (108)
