At some point in their lives, everyone has felt lonely. Total isolation, especially in solitary confinement, is, on the other hand, harmful to one’s physical and mental health. People travelling from neighboring places, for example, were compelled to isolate themselves from the others for 14 days during the Covid-19 pandemic.
Due to new rules restricting movement, the majority of people have become completely socially isolated. Cognitive development is hampered by a complete absence of engagement with society, which leads to cognitive deterioration. It also causes anxiety and poor sleep quality. People who live alone are more likely to develop depression. It has long-term mental impacts on those who are forcibly isolated against their will, such as post-traumatic stress disorder.
Isolated people are more likely to have a stroke or develop heart disease as a result of poor cardiovascular function. Total seclusion weakens immunity and increases the risk of mortality. Hallucinations and panic episodes are common side effects. It also has an impact on how information is processed. Isolation makes it harder to think clearly, which makes it tough to recall knowledge.
Social isolation carries the same health dangers as obesity and cigarette smoking. Stress is caused by social isolation. It can also cause an individual to engage in unhealthy behaviors such as binge drinking. Social isolation is linked to 40 percent of dementia cases. Loneliness also triggers long-term fight-or-flight stress signals, which harms the immune system.
People who are isolated have a lower immune system and higher inflammations than those who are not isolated. Individuals that are socially isolated do not engage with others; they do not attend groups, play sports, or participate in religious activities. Seclusion is aided by the perception that the elderly are less productive. It also contributes to an increase in loneliness. Statistics demonstrate that senior individuals who go to church and engage in various religious traditions live longer. When the elderly participate in social activities, they improve and become happier.
A person’s health suffers when they are completely isolated. Exercise, which allows the release of endorphins, commonly known as the happy hormone, is a good way to avoid it. Meditation is a great strategy to avoid feeling lonely. You can also go walks in the woods to reconnect with nature. Taking up a new pastime keeps your mind occupied and allows you to meet new people. Providing social support for the elderly prevents absolute isolation and reduces its negative effects.
