Perception is Reality

Click here to read the results of a research study titled “Perception Is Reality: How Employees Perceive What Motivates HR Practices Affects their Engagement, Behavior and Performance” (Nishii, L., Lepak, D., and Schneider, B. 2011. CAHRS ResearchLink/Cornell University ILR School).  Focus your consideration on the Study Questions presented on page two and the Takeaway section on page five.  Notice how clear communication regarding the intent of HR practices can positively influence perceptions of the motivations driving the intent.  Also notice the authors’ findings that businesses should pay particular attention to candidate perceptions of HR practices in the recruitment and selection stages of the hiring process.

Think about how HR practices were presented to you at the time you were being recruited, selected, and hired.

  1. Were all communications regarding HR practices presented in a positive manner, or were there some messages that were ambiguous or even negative in tone?
  2. Were HR practices presented as “necessary evils”, or were they discussed in ways that emphasized their positive aspects regarding employee value, respect, development, and opportunity?
  3. If you were conducting your own recruitment and selection, how would you alter the way that HR was typified?
  4. Given the research findings that employee attitudes are linked to customer satisfaction, how will you tailor your communications with employment applicants to positively shape their impressions regarding HR at your organization or business?
