The point of this exercise is to break down the fundamentals of doing original analyses of texts so that when it comes to future literary analyses, you will have more of a tool kit with which to construct your essays. If you begin by reading texts with a fine tooth comb – observing patterns, stylistic choices, noting (and investigating) references to contemporary issues or events in the text – you will find it much easier to develop a nuanced and original reading of the work when it comes time to write a literary analysis.
While I am interested in the original ideas that your close reading will generate, I am providing some suggestions for approaches to this assignment below. These are merely suggestions for those of you who are having difficulty coming up with your own topics. You are NOT required to use any of these.
Consider the centrality of the love to all the British poets that we have encountered. Discuss the different types and origins of these loves.
How does darkness serve as a symbol in Heart of Darkness? Discuss the various ways Conrad uses and presents the word and the concept. Explore “darkness’s” various meanings and consider, as well, its juxtaposition with light.
Many literary works use contrasting places to represent opposed forces or ideas that are central to the thematic meaning of the work. Heart of Darkness compares and contrasts two such places. Write an essay analyzing one or more set of contrasting places; discuss how the places are both similar and different, what each place represents, and how their contrast and comparison contributes to one or more meanings (themes) of the work.
