1. Time: Eight minutes. Must end between 7:45 – 8:15.
2. The speech will persuade the audience, as discussed in your lessons. Info-suasion will be
graded down seriously.
3. Structural issues:
A. Attn Gainer? Unrushed, solid intro crafting the audience’s attention
B. Clear, interesting thesis?
C. Does the speaker clearly identify distinct enthymemes, main points? Is there an
appropriate form of signposting?
D. Clear and proper transitions throughout? Are the bits of evidence within each
enthymeme clearly tied together so that we see how they all lead to the persuasive goal?
D. Is the Conclusion appropriate for the type of persuasive speech being given—
True/False, Quality, or Policy?
4. Topic quality choice: Do we get a worthwhile topic? narrowed and focused? Would it be
interesting to the audience? Is it actually persuasive? Does it call us to accept, evaluate, or do
something?
5. Quality of enthymemes in speech: Are there diverse sources with real ethos? Are these sources
the audience would reasonably accept? Is there a clear blending of logos, pathos, and ethos
throughout the speech and in each enthymeme? Are clear, specific emotions targeted in the
pathetic evidence?
6. Quality of the citations : # and handling. Five verbal citations within the speech; five different
sources; these are the absolute minimum requirements. It is expected that you will go beyond
these numbers.
7. Structured Properly and Persuasively? Does the structure of the speech match up with the
type of persuasive speech being given—True/False, Quality, or Policy?
