You are a senior manager employed by Terminal Projects International and your Company has been shortlisted to manage the construction of a one kilometer underground metro rail link joining Dubai Terminal 1 to Dubai Terminal 2. This will enable transit passengers to be able to travel between the terminals in a more convenient manner. In addition to the construction of the tunnel, Terminal Projects International will be responsible for implementing the rail service which will operate along the tunnel.
This is a multimillion dirham project which would involve the recruitment of expatriate manpower from overseas, importing special drilling machinery from a USA based manufacturer, importing rail coaches from a supplier in Germany and importing building materials for the tunnel from various overseas suppliers.
You have been nominated by your Company as the Project Manager, should Terminal Projects International be successful in securing the contract.
Assignment Tasks
Task 1: Reviewing The Project Scope Reviewing
Your Company has been invited to a meeting with Dubai Airports, the authority which manages Dubai International Airport. The purpose of the meeting is to discuss the Project Scope to enable your Company to be fully aware of what is required.
Discuss ten key issues that you would expect to be included in the scope of the project which will provide you with relevant information for Terminal Projects International to prepare a bid for the project. Explain why each of these issues would be important.
Task 2: A Risk Assessment
Before commencing the project it would be necessary to carry out a Risk Assessment.
(a) Specify five risks.
(b) For each risk outline what action you would take to minimize the risk.
(c) For each risk outline what contingency plan you would propose.
Specify what you would consider to be ten key milestones within the project.
