OPTION 1: Implicit social attitudes
Objective: To experience the Implicit Association Test (IAT) and to gain insight into the difference between explicit and implicit attitudes.
Go to https://implicit.harvard.edu/implicit/demo/ and try any Implicit Association Tests. Note the results you receive on each test.
Write an analytical reflection on the following prompts (about 2 pages):
1. What three tests did you try? What were your results on each test? Did you find the results surprising, or were they what you expected? How did your results coincide with the current findings on implicit attitudes toward the groups you selected?
2. Define and distinguish between implicit and explicit prejudice. Do you think the Implicit Association Test is a good measure of your non-conscious attitudes? Why or why not?
3. Review the basic logic of the IAT and priming techniques to measure prejudice, and explain why these techniques are often preferable to self-report measures.
OR
OPTION 2: Persuasion
Identify a marketing situation in which you were the target of a persuasive attempt. First, identify a marketing situation in which you were the target of a persuasive/social influence attempt. If you can’t identify one, then engage in a new shopping experience that would allow you to be the target of a persuasive attempt. Then, write an analytical reflection on the experience (about 2 pages).
You have considerable leeway in selecting the situation, some examples include: purchasing a vehicle at a dealership, on the market for new furniture, purchasing a new piece of electronic equipment, shopping for a wedding ring.
In your paper, write about:
1. Describe the situation in which you were a target of a persuasive attempt. Provide any background information if necessary.
2. How did you present yourself in the situation (e.g., what you were planning to buy, what you said or did, if you were alone or with a friend, etc.)?
3. Identify and explain the specific social influence/persuasion tactics that were used on you. Use the concepts covered in Chapters 5 and/or 7.
4. Describe how you felt during the situation (e.g., how pressured did you feel, what social norms did you pick up on, your emotions or attitudes toward the product).
5. What was the outcome of the situation? (e.g., did the persuasion attempts work on you?)
