English 1A Essay #2 100 points
Amusing Ourselves to DEATH
Argumentative Synthesis
For this essay, you need to answer the following:
At the end of Part I of Amusing Ourselves to DEATH, Neil Postman discusses his intention with Part II. In that section on page 80, he describes, “[…] television’s way of knowing is uncompromisingly hostile to typography’s way of knowing […]”. What does he mean by “way of knowing” and skipping over television, how does this “way of knowing” translate to the modern internet typography?
Purpose:
Using your resources (notes, class discussions, reading journal, the book, the introductory, additional class readings, etc.) you need to compose a unified and coherent argument that supports your definition of what Postman meant by “way of knowing” as it relates to earlier typography and your own interpretation of modern typography. The argument must evolve from your analysis of Postman. Do not just quote him. You need provide an analysis of how he built his argument about typography and extend that to your own discussion of the internet typography.
Audience:
Your readers have read the book, but may not necessarily agree with everything that he says as it relates to typography. Because they are critical, they are looking to you for a clear argument based on textual analysis to help them decide if his epistemology is based on truths or interpretation. They are modern readers who are not necessarily sure that Postman wasn’t just frustrated about television.
Format:
As with our other essays, the
introductory paragraph should contain the necessary elements (author, title, summary) and end with a clear and direct main claim. In this case, you will claim that his typographic epistemology is related to modern internet epistemology or not;
body paragraphs should begin with a sub claim that identifies a specific passage/event from the book and how it relates to the typographic epistemology and how it connects to the main claim;
in addition, you should develop additional support in which you explore any parts of the text that are not resolved from your analysis of the main claim, but relates to your internet epistemology
concluding paragraph can provide a brief overview of how your analysis of Postman and a modern typography epistemology strengthens your main claim.
Grading:
It is worth a maximum of 100 points and these points are distributed among the expectations of the assignment. These include:
A unified coherent text that reflects critical reading on your part of the book;
