Your problem formulation will be a minimum 3 pages and will allow you to explore and research an issue that
you care about and feel needs advocacy. As you incorporate your personal views and experiences alongside
the voices of others, you will meaningfully take part in a conversation about this issue.
Using a minimum of 4 sources, the first part of your project should do the following and should be at least 3
pages long:
Give an introduction to and provide background to the issue. The significance of the topic should be made clear here:
– Show who is affected and at what level or rate
– Use a source to show a meaningful statistic, a strong anecdote, or example
– Do not write a thesis statement here since you are still gathering information
– Understand who your audience is (i.e. who should know or care about this that doesn’t?) and reflect that
understanding in your introduction
Show the significance of the issue in your life. Why did you choose to write about it – how does it affect you personally? Be specific and explain.
Show the how the issue is discussed and viewed in popular culture (social media, the news, and the web).
– What you write in this section can vary greatly from topic to topic, but you’ll need to develop at least three
or four important points to discuss or in order to engage meaningfully with the topic.
– The remainder of your sources should be used in this section
Write a final paragraph that draws conclusions based on your most important research findings. Take this opportunity to remind your reader why they should care about this issue. One helpful way of doing this is to ask your reader to look back at the issue as you’ve presented it and forward to the future: what does the future look like if we think differently about this issue? Or if we don’t? (no sources here)
Specific instructions: I have uploaded a rubric checklist for this essay please make sure the finished product meets all the guidelines on there. Finally, please keep the vocabulary level of this essay equivalent to a beginner-intermediate writer.
