Task
Project Description: Catalysts are used in range of industries to facilitate complex chemical reactions. In the petroleum industry, fluid cracking catalyst (FCC) and hydrodesulphurisation (HDS) catalysts play an important role in the production of petrol and other petroleum-based chemicals. These catalysts typically start out containing primarily silica and alumina but during their use they absorb a wide range of metals which limit their effectiveness and requires them to be replaced. These metals can be harmful for the environment if placed in standard landfills. This project seeks to understand the viability of using spent catalyst waste as a source of metals for complex alloys. The goal is to determine if a mixed-metals recycling approach spent catalysts is a viable alternative to current approaches involving either a.) separating all of the valuable metals into individual product streams; b.) using them as feed for the cement industry; or c.) paying to landfill them
