Background:
The purpose of this summary is for you to show what you have learned from the sources you read and viewed in our inquiry — Why trees? how do they address the climate and biodiversityl crisis?
Our approach has been through the major disciplinary categories (Natural Sciences, Humanities, Social Sciences, and Fine and Performing Arts) and a few disciplines within each of the categories. Although the topic of trees was the same, the categories and separate disciplines within each approached our inquiry differently. They studied different aspects/phenomena of the subject, employed different methods in their research to answer their questions, asked different questions, used different assumptions about what constituted acceptable knowledge, and presented their results differently. Yet, when combined, they yield a fuller picture or a holistic understanding of our inquiry – the role of trees in the climate and biodiversity crisis. This kind of approach is interdisciplinary. In this approach, it is assumed and proposed that studying multiple disciplines are necessary to fully understand and solve the complexity of real world problems.
Prompt question:
Choose one and write your answer in the form of a letter to me.
Begin the letter “Dear Mrs. Fraschella,” end with a closing like “sincerely,” and add your name/signature. (Don’t forget the date. A heading is not necessary.)
Letter should be a minimum of 400 words (approx.. 2 pages).
• Make sure you include opening and closing paragraphs.
• Make sure you write about one specific example representing a discipline from each of the four categories.
• Include only material from the texts (written or visual) that we used in class.
• If you include quotations, make sure you use quotation marks and provide context or explanation for the quotation.
