Read through these directions in their entirety before starting this assignment, but do not do so before you finish viewing all of the Week 9 mini-lecture videos.
Open the Week 9 GIS Analysis Assignment Template Download Week 9 GIS Analysis Assignment Template (this template is also provided at the link below these directions) and briefly familiarize yourself with what youre being asked to do. Make a copy of the template and save it to your computer; you will use this copy to complete the assignment. Then return here and read the more in-depth directions below.
Complete a web search and find two images that were produced by GIS Analysis.
Your two images must show the result of using different GIS analysis tools (in other words, you cannot choose two images that both show the results of using the same GIS analysis tool).
You cannot choose images that show output from using a Density Estimation Tool (see step #5 below).
Insert both of your images into your copy of the template at the appropriate locations.
The goal of this assignment is to explain why the images youve chosen are examples of GIS analysis. In crafting your explanations, be sure to construct your explanations in terms of the definition of GIS Analysis that we covered in Week 9’s mini-lectures. In other words, be sure to clearly explain what new information was created during the analytical process. Usually this means describing:
The spatial data the author started with:
When GIS users start an analysis, they must have spatial data to analyze. As weve learned (and reinforced) in previous weeks, users can either create that spatial data themselves using GPS or remote sensing technologies, or they can acquire spatial data that someone else has created, often accessing it from various spatial data repositories. We did the latter in Week 8 when we downloaded the Caribbean Marine Protected Areas spatial dataset from DataBasin and analyzed it using the online GIS Mango.
How they manipulated that spatial data:
During a GIS analysis, once spatial data is introduced into the GIS program, the authors must use GIS tools to manipulate it. For example, we did this in Week 8 when we introduced the Caribbean Marine Protected Areas dataset into Mango and manipulated it with Proximity, Query, and Heatmap tools, to name a few.
The new information that was created by that manipulation:
This New information is a tangible thing that you can see and point to; it is not conceptual. For example, in the case of the GIS Statistics tool, the New Information it produces is that table of summary numbers. In the case of manipulation using the Line Intersect Tool, it is the new vector (point) dataset that contains spatial data for the points of line intersection. For manipulation using the Intersect Tool, it is the new polygon dataset that contains spatial data for the area of overlap of your two polygon input layers. For manipulation using the Density Estimation Tool, it is the new raster dataset that shows the estimated density of the input point dataset. [Go back and review these tools in the appropriate mini-lecture right now if those examples dont make sense to you.] The output of every tool we discussed in this weeks mini-lectures is some form of tangible new information (usually a new spatial dataset) that you can point to and say, this thing is the new information that was created in this analysis.
Emphasis is on the word “clearly” in #5 above. These explanations do not need to be lengthy (in fact, being concise is likely to net you a better grade- see grading rubric), but they do need to be crystal clear. Dr. Moore has created an example of how he would go about finding and explaining a GIS analysis image for this assignment; its linked on the Week 9: Assignment Help Canvas page. Because I use an image that shows the results of a Density Estimation analysis in this help example, you cannot use an example of GIS analysis that makes use of any sort of Density Estimation when you complete the assignment (and remember, this includes almost everything that’s called a “heatmap”).
This assignment is as much about expressing yourself clearly as it is about demonstrating your grasp of GIS analysis. Don’t include extraneous information that is not relevant to the explanations outlined in step #5 above. Stick to responding clearly and simply to the prompts in the assignment template. This does not mean that your answers should be short, but it does mean that you should use exactly as many words as you need to get your point across clearly, and no more.
