Case Study #4 Tony

Tony is a 54 year old African America male. He is on General Relief (GR) and receives approximately $221 a month in cash and $200 in Food stamps. He is experiencing homelessness for 1 year and lives in his car. Tony says that he does not like to stay in shelters because there are too many rules and that people that run the shelters just don’t understand him. Tony struggles to interact with, although one of his goals is to make some more friends. He has one close friend, Mike that “gets him”.

Tony states that Mike is a smart guy that he can have conversations with and Mike also does not judge him. Tony has been presented with a number of housing options but has not been able to follow through with any of the leads. Tony said that it is hard to get around because he often does not have enough money for gas. He is interested in getting a monthly bus pass but just doesn’t know how to go about it.

Tony wants to work but is unsure about the kind of work he wants to do. Before becoming homeless, Tony worked a number of office and administrative jobs. He showed you an old resume and he has a solid job history. He has chronic back issues which has made it difficult for him to stand for long periods of time. He tells you that several years ago he volunteered at a homeless shelter and he really enjoyed it.

Tony reports having problems with alcohol in the past but has been able to stay sober from alcohol for almost 6 years. He does currently smoke marijuana when he has some extra money.

Tony has told you that he has been experiencing feelings of depression for a number of months. He finds it difficult to do the things he once enjoyed and shared that it is really hard for him to get things done. One of his favorite hobbies is fishing, although he states he has not been able to go fishing for a long time due to a limited income.

Tony has a strong relationship with his mother, who lives in a nearby city. He sees his mother at least once a week and the two are very close. His mother has invited him to stay with her temporarily but Tony has refused because he does not want to be a burden to his mother. Tony does not have a relationship with his two siblings. He states that they have not spoken to him since he began experiencing homelessness. Tony would like to rebuild his relationships with his siblings but he feels ashamed of his situation.

Tony has been going to feedings at a church on Sundays. He has met a number of the church members and they have invited him to join their ministry. The church is very involved in the community and homeless services. The Pastor of the church thinks Tony would be a great addition because he is smart, kind and has lived experience which he can share with the other church members. Tony felt very excited when he was asked but has not yet accepted because he is worried he will “mess things up”.

Tony has a couple recovery goals. He wants to work and make some friends .
