Midterm Essay Assignment- Due July 3
Your midterm essay should be 4-6 pages long, double spaced with 12 point font. You will need to include citations for all sources that are cited or paraphrased. You will need to provide a works cited list for all resources that are not on the course syllabus or a part of a course module. You can use the MLA or APSA styles for these citations. Select one of the following charts to use when writing your midterm essay. Each chart provides accurate information about colony population, size and slavery information, according to colonial and early American records. Population size in the first box includes only free men, and the population of people being enslaved can be found in the last box of the charts. Please use this information to explain what your state would likely have agreed to during the Constitutional Convention.
Address each of these questions as a part of your argument:
Would your state have preferred proportional or equal representation in the Congress? Why?
Would your state have preferred more national authority or less national authority? Why?
Would your state have supported the slave trade compromise (Links to an external site.) (not the 3/5ths compromise)? Why?
In your conclusion, explain the extent to which your believe your state’s conduct during the Constitutional Convention would have:
protect and/or grow the power of the state
preserve the American practice of slavery
Remember, you will need to use all of the information below to get a sense of how large or small you state was by comparing population numbers and growth. Likewise, you will need to compare the states dependence on the forced labor of slaves by considering how the enslaved population compares to the free population and how many enslaved persons live within your chosen state relative to others.
You are required to present an argument about how population and institutionalized slavery affect the political culture, expectations, and beliefs of the people that were debating the shape of the Constitution. You cannot simply restate the information posted below or rely on simple ideas like NORTH v. SOUTH. Make sure you use the textbook and the de Tocqueville– do not rely exclusively on resources that you find online.
