Selecting a Topic
In this activity, you will explore options for writing topics from the provided list and select one. If you have an idea for a topic that isn’t on the list or would like additional options, ask your teacher.
Select two or three topics that seem interesting to you.

Then try at least two prewriting techniques (freewriting, listing, idea mapping) to decide on a single topic for your researched informational essay. If you feel that you need to develop your understanding of a topic before making a decision, conduct some brief research.
Next, write out the potential research questions that you developed while prewriting. Try narrowing or broadening the scope and focus of each idea to see what you come up with. Keep your task, purpose, and audience in mind as you write down possible research questions.
Save your prewriting notes and ideas in a document on your computer. Your instructor may ask you to submit your work for this activity.
