RESEARCH PROJECT GUIDELINES
This research project will be your major writing assignment for the semester. It will challenge you to do your own research and demonstrate good writing skills. Your paper should observe the following guidelines:
6 pages of text minimum – double spaced (not including the Works Cited/Bibliography page)
Use proper citations within the paper (MLA, APA, Chicago – citation style of your choice)
Include a Works Cited/Bibliography page with at least 3 sources
12 point font, Times New Roman
1” margins
Please research a jazz artist of your choice. Recommended artists include:
Miles Davis
Duke Ellington
Louis Armstrong
John Coltrane
Charlie Parker
Thelonious Monk
Dizzy Gillespie
Ella Fitzgerald
Billie Holiday
Charles Mingus
Dave Brubeck
Ornette Coleman
Count Basie
Lester Young
Frank Sinatra
Coleman Hawkins
Benny Goodman
Sidney Bechet
Django Reinhardt
Art Tatum
Once you have chosen your artist, pick one (or two) works of theirs to listen to and write about. Your paper should include a brief biography of your composer and discussion about the piece you chose (about 50% of the paper on each). I want you to reach out and find as many sources as you can on your composer and the chosen work. There should be plenty of resources out there, whether in book or journal form, and stay away from unscholarly websites.
